About Chenshan Botanical Garden
Its botanical collections are organized into themed gardens and greenhouse displays, with conservation areas forming another part of the site.
The rose garden uses water around its planted landscape, while collections of orchids, aquatic plants and dry-habitat plants offer different ways to compare plant adaptations. Choose a few collections as the focus of a visit rather than trying to cover every part of the garden.
Shanghai Chenshan National Botanical Garden, also known as Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden, is Shanghai's second botanical garden and its largest. It had a trial opening on 26 April 2010 and opened fully on 24 January 2011. On 29 June 2026 the State Council approved establishing it as a national botanical garden, making Chenshan China's third national-level botanical garden.
The garden lies in Sheshan town, Songjiang District, and contains a hill called Chen Shan (辰山) within its grounds. Bordered by Chenhua Road to the south, Qianxin Highway to the west and Shenzhuan Highway to the north, it covers 207 hectares divided into a central display area, a plant conservation area, a five-continents plant zone and an outer buffer zone. The central display area holds 26 themed plant gardens, including a 12,608-square-meter exhibition greenhouse.
The garden was rated a national 4A tourist attraction (国家4A级旅游景区) on 3 October 2012 and a national science popularization education base on 15 October 2012. In January 2013 the Shanghai greening authority named it a 'Shanghai five-star park,' and in June 2013 it was upgraded to a 'Shanghai thematic science popularization venue.'
