About Chang Family Compound
Its surviving buildings emphasise learning and decorative craft as well as wealth. Brick, stone and wood carving appear throughout the residential groups, while a collection of carved stone lions makes a distinctive stop. Behind the courts, the garden and Guanji Tower change the scale of the visit from enclosed domestic spaces to a designed landscape.
The Qing dynasty Jin merchant Chang family carried out large-scale residential construction in their home village of Chewang over more than 200 years. The resulting walled, castle-like compound is enclosed by ramparts with eight gates and organized along two main streets running north-south and east-west, covering a total area of more than 100 mu (亩). Its surviving Donggenji Gate (东艮吉堡门) faces east, fronted by a white stone arch bridge.
The compound contains more than 1,500 rooms, over 50 multi-story buildings and 13 garden areas. About 120,000 square meters have been restored and opened to visitors, comprising some 40,000 square meters of residential quarters and 80,000 square meters of gardens, mainly the original courtyards south of the east-west main street.
What to look for
- The varied carved stone lions and decorative work around the residential courtyards.
- The large rear garden and Guanji Tower, contrasting with the enclosed courtyard street.
