Yuci Old City 榆次老城

Yuci Laocheng

Yuci Old City combines surviving religious buildings with streets and visitor facilities rebuilt around the turn of the twenty-first century.

About Yuci Old City

The City God Temple provides the strongest historic focus, while Qingxu Pavilion supplies another landmark within the renewed townscape. Reading the site this way avoids mistaking every shopfront for an untouched old building. It is a useful compact introduction to Yuci's urban heritage, especially when paired with close attention to roofs, gateways and the arrangement of temple courts.

Yuci Old City occupies the site of the former county seat of Yuci County, now Yuci District in Jinzhong. Around 2000, local officials demolished the old town's houses and lanes, apart from a few protected monuments including the City God Temple (城隍庙), Qingxu Pavilion (清虚阁) and the Confucian Temple (文庙), and built a large imitation-antique commercial street in their place.

Besides tourism, the rebuilt street is now mainly used for filming movies and television productions. Among the older thoroughfares, East Street, South Street and North Street remain, alongside the City God Temple, as the few surviving fragments of the historic town.

What to look for

  • Yuci City God Temple, the principal historic religious compound within the renewed old city.
  • Qingxu Pavilion and the traditional street layout around the restored visitor area.
