About Yanmen Pass

Its walls and gatehouses explain how a pass worked as a defended settlement, with a trading street below the military buildings. The Dili and Tianxian gates give the visit a clear structure; Zhenbian Hall, associated with the ancient general Li Mu, adds the commemorative side of this frontier landscape. Allow for steps and changes of level between the village approach and fortifications.

Yanmen Pass is named for the wild geese that migrate between the two facing mountains forming its gate-like opening. In the late Warring States period, King Wuling of Zhao (赵武灵王) built a Great Wall and established Yanmen Commandery (雁门郡), stationing the general Li Mu (李牧) to guard against the Xiongnu. A Tang-dynasty fortress later blocked Turkic incursions, then fell into ruin under the Yuan; in 1374 the Marquis of Ji'an, Lu Xiang (陆享), repaired the pass and built a new fortress five kilometres to its east.

The pass lies in the Yanmen Mountains (雁门山), between the basins of the Sanggan and Hutuo rivers, which form a climatic divide: the Hutuo valley's milder conditions support rice cultivation, while the Sanggan basin is colder, drier and more saline. Yanmen village lies about 20 kilometres from the Dai County seat and about 180 kilometres northeast of Taiyuan.

Yanmen Pass, together with Ningwu Pass and Pian Pass, forms the 'Outer Three Passes' (外三关), and with Hangu, Xianxia and Jianmen passes is one of the Four Great Ancient Passes of China. It was listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位) in 2001 and rated a national 5A tourist attraction (国家5A级旅游景区) in 2017; restoration between 2009 and 2011 repaired 1,800 metres of wall, three watchtowers and five gate towers.
