About Tianjin Polar Ocean Park

The main building has a whale-like outline, and its visitor areas combine polar-animal displays with a transparent aquarium tunnel. The contrast between above-water animal viewing and the underwater tunnel gives the visit a clear structure. Check the current park map and daily programme on arrival, as the animals on view and any presentations can change independently of the building's permanent layout.

Tianjin Polar Ocean World is part of a wider leisure and tourism project in the Xiangluowan business district that also includes a hotel apartment building, a city tourism avenue and a carnival boardwalk street, with total investment of around 1.6 billion yuan (人民币). The main polar-ocean hall topped out in December 2009 as the largest polar-ocean aquarium in China at the time, and the whole project opened to the public on 1 October 2011.

The building covers about 47,000 square meters, rises roughly 43 meters inside with a highest point of 67 meters, and is divided into four floors. The first floor holds offices and equipment rooms, the second and third floors form the visitor area with a 70-meter acrylic-glass panoramic underwater tunnel, and the fourth floor contains dining and other facilities. A separate performance hall seats over a thousand spectators around several pools used for animal shows.

The park displays 135 animal species excluding fish, among them polar bears, beluga whales, walruses, sea lions and penguins. It also serves as a science-education base for polar marine animals in North China and as a breeding base for various marine species.
