About Duku Highway Museum

Clothing and equipment make the working conditions tangible, while landscape displays introduce the terrain the route crosses. The museum stands near the highway’s northern starting area in Dushanzi. It is useful preparation for the journey, but a museum visit does not confirm that every mountain-road section is open.

Development began in 2018, and the museum opened on 12 June 2020. During preparation, staff interviewed former road builders and other witnesses, gathering more than a thousand objects and documents and over 1,500 photographs. The institution became a national 3A tourist attraction (国家AAA级旅游景区) in December 2020 and received the regional designation 'Distinctive Museum of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region' (新疆维吾尔自治区特色博物馆) in May 2022.

The building has more than 1,700 square metres of floor space, including 1,200 square metres of galleries. Displays address local urban history, highway construction and landscapes, using paintings, sculpture, objects and reconstructed settings. Beyond the permanent galleries, the museum runs mobile exhibitions and collects material at different locations in Dushanzi (独山子).

Getting to Duku Highway Museum

Navigate to Duku Highway Museum in Dushanzi, near the road’s kilometre-zero visitor area. Dushanzi is separate from central Karamay. Check current road restrictions and your vehicle’s eligibility independently before continuing onto the highway.
