About Kashgar Prefecture Museum
The municipal government's tourism overview, credited to the municipal culture, sport, radio, television and tourism bureau, lists the museum as a 3A-grade scenic area on Tianshan West Road in Kashgar city. It gives the site as 50 mu and the floor area as 15,100 square metres, with a main building of four floors and 6,500 square metres of exhibition space, and records a collection of more than 5,300 pieces or sets of which 63 pieces or sets are precious artefacts.
A China News Service Xinjiang report credited to the Kashgar Prefecture Integrated Media Centre walks through three floors. The first holds the themed exhibition 西域回响·丝路长歌——中国新疆历史民族宗教文化专题展; the second holds 昆仑流域·古道遗珍——喀什历史文物陈列厅, where the report singles out a Northern Dynasties three-eared embossed pottery jar (北朝三耳压花陶罐), a Tang dynasty plaster relief wall brick showing the Buddha preaching (唐代石膏浮雕佛说法图墙砖) and a Northern Song silk-cotton robe edged with kesi (北宋饰缂丝边缘绢棉袍), among others; the third holds the Kashgar prefecture planning exhibition (喀什地区规划展).
The same report records a movable-relic digitisation and protection project that went live in 2024, under which 52 precious objects were captured in three dimensions, and notes that the museum provides 60 free audio-guide devices and receives more than 300,000 visitors a year on average. It records that the Chinese Museums Association rated the museum a national second-grade museum in August 2024.
The two sources differ on detail. The municipal page gives a main building of four floors and a collection of more than 5,300 pieces or sets, while the China News Service report describes a three-storey main building and gives the collection as 5,265 items, broken into 16 first-grade, 12 second-grade and 35 third-grade objects. Neither source says how the museum is administered.
