About Tacheng
The regional museum in the Red Building introduces that history, while the accordion museum offers a more focused look at instruments and musical exchange. These make a compact city visit distinct from the surrounding prefecture’s long road trips. Border-port visits require their own current arrangements.
In the mid-nineteenth century, the city was surrounded by an earthen wall and served as the residence of two Qing ambans. Its trade with Russia centred particularly on tea, making that commodity a specific part of its role in regional commerce.
The Baktu border crossing (巴克图口岸) reopened on 20 October 1990. It was designated a first-class port of entry (一类口岸) on 14 March 1994, and opened to use by third nations on 1 July 1995. These changes established the crossing's status and widened the range of international users permitted to pass through it.

Background & history
Tacheng (Chinese: 塔城), also known as Qoqek (Uyghur: چۆچەك; Kazakh: شاۋەشەك) and historically as Chuguchak (Russian: Чугучак), is a county-level city and the administrative seat of Tacheng Prefecture, in northern Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang. The Chinese name "Tacheng" is an abbreviation of Tarbagatay City (塔尔巴哈台城), a reference to the Tarbagatay Mountains. Tacheng is located in the Dzungarian Basin, some 10 km (6.2 mi) from the Chinese border with Kazakhstan. For a long time it has been a major center for trade with Central Asia because it is an agricultural hub. Its industries include food processing, textiles, and utilities.
