About Hangzhou Botanical Garden

Its themed plant collections offer a slower visit than the lake’s busiest shoreline. Lingfeng is especially associated with plum and wintersweet planting, while Yuquan’s fish-viewing setting adds a different waterside stop. Flowering dates change with weather, so use the garden’s current bloom reports to choose an area; the wooded grounds and botanical collections remain the basis of the visit outside peak flowering.

A preparatory committee for Hangzhou Botanical Garden was formed in 1955, and the garden was formally established in July 1965, with Yu Senwen (余森文) as its first director. It is affiliated with the Hangzhou Garden and Cultural Relics Administration Bureau (杭州市园林文物管理局). The garden covers 248.46 hectares at Taoyuanling (桃源岭), northwest of West Lake (西湖) in Xihu District (西湖区), bordering Zhejiang University's Yuquan campus (浙大玉泉校区) to the north. Elevation across the grounds ranges from 10 to 165 meters, and the soil is red soil and yellow soil. It holds 3,458 species of plants from China and abroad, belonging to 223 families and 1,209 genera.
