About Viewing Fish at Flower Pond
Visitors gather around the red carp pond, while the Peony Pavilion anchors a separate planted area. The traditional name combines the local stream with the pleasure of watching fish; it does not describe a working harbour. The garden is a useful stopping point at the southern end of Su Causeway, where paths continue beside smaller stretches of water.
The garden is included among the Ten Scenes of West Lake (西湖十景). In northern Wu dialects, gang (港) is a general term for a river, including one with no through outlet, rather than a harbour. The stream here, also called Huaxi (花溪), flows down from Huajia Mountain (花家山), and its name originally had no connection to flowers. Several thousand red carp live in the fishpond, where visitors enjoy feeding them. The park, centred on Mudan Ting (牡丹亭) with peonies growing nearby, is a traditional leisure spot for Hangzhou residents.
