About Mount Mogan

The surviving European-style houses reveal the mountain’s early twentieth-century resort history, while Sword Pond connects its landscape with the legend of swordsmiths Gan Jiang and Mo Ye. Use the public mountain paths to compare the villa district with bamboo and water. Many historic houses now serve other functions, including accommodation, so their presence on a route does not mean their interiors are open to casual visitors.

The earliest surviving written reference to the mountain's name appears in a Ming provincial gazetteer, which described a clear sword-casting pool and a nearby sharpening stone. Earlier structures on the mountain included a pagoda built on Tashan (塔山) in 937 and a temple built on Tongshan (铜山) the following year. The mountain itself is an offshoot of the Tianmu Mountains (天目山), rising above the low Hangjiahu Plain (杭嘉湖平原).

Foreign residents began renting local houses in the 1880s, before missionaries, merchants and customs officials built villas, churches and public halls. A summer association was established in 1898. By the 1920s the foreign resort occupied 1,940 mu (亩); that period left 154 Western-style villas, most in a Western European country-house style. Some surviving villas have since become hotels or guesthouses, continuing the mountain's use as a summer retreat.

What to look for

  • The early resort villas contrast European-style architecture with bamboo-covered slopes.
  • Sword Pond gives the mountain’s swordsmith legend a specific landscape focus.
