About Citadel of Jiaxing
Its surviving gate, drum tower and flanking wall preserve a fragment of a much larger compound; the present gate structure dates from rebuilding in 1908. Behind it, the site park opened in 2021 introduces a modern landscape around the historical remains. Compare the arched entrance and timber tower with the park’s copper ribbon and ginkgo planting, keeping the surviving fabric distinct from the contemporary interpretation.
The first enclosure was built in 231, when the county was renamed from Youquan (由拳县) to Hexing (禾兴县). Expansion of an outer city during the late Tang and Five Dynasties periods left this inner enclosure as the administrative centre for subsequent governments. The compound later accommodated military barracks, a school and a convalescent institution, reflecting successive changes in its use.
The gate's arch is 5.4 metres high with a span of 4.5 metres. Above it, the three-bay tower has a surrounding gallery and a double-eaved, hipped-and-gabled roof. An inscription concerning repairs to the prefectural offices is set into its western wall. The remains became a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位) on 16 October 2019.
