About Orchid Pavilion
It is associated with the calligrapher Wang Xizhi and the literary gathering held in 353.
That gathering inspired the celebrated Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Collection. The garden setting is therefore closely tied to the history of calligraphy and literati culture.
The present site was rebuilt in 1548 and subsequently underwent further alterations. It became a Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit in 1963. Restoration beginning in 1979 sought to retain the character of the old structures and largely recovered the arrangement associated with the Ming and Qing periods.
A winding stream runs in front of Liushang Pavilion (流觞亭). The Youjun Shrine (右军祠) contains a statue of Wang Xizhi (王羲之) and displays different versions of his preface. An imperial stele bears inscriptions by the Kangxi (康熙) and Qianlong (乾隆) emperors on its two opposing faces. A separate stele inscribed with the site's name was reassembled after damage and retains visible gaps in its characters.
