About Nancuiping Park

Water surrounds and softens the raised ground, creating a choice between a slope walk and a gentler lakeside circuit. Named areas include Cuiping Lancui and Jinghu Yingcui, emphasizing the hill and reflected greenery, with lotus-themed planting elsewhere. The park's interest lies in this transformation of reused ground into public open space, rather than in a claim that the hill is a natural mountain.

The park, originally named Duishan Park ('hill-piling park'), occupies a site that had been a construction-waste landfill on the southern urban-rural fringe of Tianjin. In 1986 the city's mayor, Li Ruihuan (李瑞环), proposed and approved a project to pile the waste into a landscaped hill, aiming to dispose of construction spoil and harmless industrial waste while creating public green space for sightseeing, rest and exercise.

The project began on 27 May 1986, south of Shuishang Park (水上公园), covering about 80 hectares. The park covers a total area of 335,000 square metres, including a hill area of 121,000 square metres with a main peak 52 metres high, and a water area of 85,000 square metres; the hill's landscaping was built entirely from construction spoil (建筑渣土).
