About Shanghai Wild Animal Park

The two arrangements give different ways to observe wildlife: a managed drive through open enclosures and a walking route among individual exhibit areas.

The pedestrian collections include primates, elephants and birds, with individual animals and access varying. Choose the park’s authorized safari transport and follow its instructions; the vehicle section is not an independent walking route. Plan the two sections from the current map rather than relying on old show schedules.

The park was built jointly by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the State Forestry Administration (国家林业局) as China's first national-level wildlife park. It opened on 18 November 1995 with a total investment of 300 million yuan. On 8 August 2019 it launched China's first themed night wildlife park project. A staff member was killed by bears in the drive-through section on 17 October 2020, after which that section was temporarily closed.

The park covers 153 hectares (2,300 mu, 亩), about 35 kilometers from central Shanghai, in Xuanqiao town, Pudong. It holds more than 200 species and over ten thousand animals, including giraffes, zebras, antelope and white rhinoceros from abroad, and animals under first-class state protection in China such as the giant panda, golden monkey and golden takin. It was among China's first batch of AAAA-rated tourist attractions and was approved as a national 5A tourist attraction (国家5A级旅游景区) on 8 May 2007.

What to look for

  • The vehicle safari section presents animals in larger open enclosures.
  • The pedestrian section offers a separate sequence of primate, elephant and bird exhibits.

The surrounding area

A large district containing major museums and the tower skyline. A hotel near one attraction may still be far from another.
