About Fuzhou Changle International Airport
The Binhai Express links its Airport station with central Fuzhou and the main railway station, making the rail-to-terminal connection a useful feature to understand before arrival. Airport construction has altered the pedestrian approach, so follow current signs between the station and terminal. Check the terminal on the flight booking and choose the city connection accordingly.
The airport was first proposed in 1991 and construction began in 1993, making it the first large, modern airport in China financed entirely by a local government; it opened on 23 June 1997 with a single runway, a 137,000-square-meter terminal and 24 stands. Provincial authorities initially hoped it would match the standard of Singapore Changi Airport, but early passenger volumes were low, causing financial losses. In 2003 the airport shifted from sole municipal funding and management to a shareholding, group-based structure, bringing in provincial capital and passing management to the Xiamen International Airport Group.
A first expansion round began in August 2010, mainly enlarging the apron from 24 to 36 stands and adding terminal space, raising annual capacity above 11 million passengers; throughput first passed 10 million passengers on 30 November 2015. A second round, launched around 2014-2015 at a cost of about 1.95 billion yuan, added a new main terminal building and wings and expanded the apron and taxiways to 62 stands, completed in stages between 2017 and 2018 and raising capacity to 25 million passengers a year. A further expansion begun in September 2020 is adding a 255,000-square-meter T2 terminal, a new runway and 68 stands, intended to bring capacity to 36 million passengers annually.
