About Luoxing Pagoda
The present stone pagoda is a Ming-period structure.
Its position above Mawei port also gave it a role as a navigation landmark. The river and port setting explain why this tower has significance beyond its religious origin.
The pagoda was first built in the Song dynasty. Luoxing Hill (罗星山) was originally a river island known as Moxin Island (磨心岛). The hill is now joined to the northern bank of the Min River (闽江). The tower collapsed during the Wanli era (万历) of the Ming dynasty, and Xu Bo (徐勃) and others proposed rebuilding it during the Tianqi era (天启). The reconstructed stone pagoda has seven storeys and eight sides.
The tower stands 31.5 metres high, with a base measuring 8.6 metres in diameter. Each storey has an arched doorway, and steps run through the interior. The pagoda was damaged and its finial destroyed in 1884; an iron ball was subsequently placed on the top. Further restoration took place in 1964. In 1985, the pagoda was listed as a Fujian provincial cultural heritage site (福建省文物保护单位).
