About Mengshan (Shandong)
Guimeng, on the Pingyi side, leads toward its highest summit and combines rugged rock with a landscape of pines and deep valleys. Yingwo Peak rises sharply from a ravine, its summit trees resembling a natural rock garden. The large Longevity Immortal carving on the western side of Guimeng adds a modern cultural layer. Choose this sector deliberately; routes marketed as Yunmeng or Tianmeng begin elsewhere.
Mengshan, formerly known as Dongmeng (东蒙) or Dongshan (东山), is part of the Yimeng Mountains (沂蒙山) and runs northwest to southeast for more than 100 kilometers along the border of Mengyin, Pingyi and Fei counties in central Shandong. It forms the watershed between the Dongwen River (东汶河) and the Fanghe River (祊河), tributaries on the right bank of the Yi River (沂河). Its main peak, Guimeng Peak (龟蒙顶), rises 1156 meters in Bolin township in northeastern Pingyi county and is the second-highest peak in Shandong province.
The area holds diamond deposits; the '701' diamond mine (七〇一钻石矿) in Mengyin county is described as Asia's largest diamond deposit. During the War of Resistance Against Japan the mountain served as the center of a Chinese Communist Party base area. A Mengshan National Forest Park (蒙山国家森林公园) has since been established here, rated a national 4A tourist attraction (国家4A级旅游景区).
