About Folded Brocade Hill
Stone steps lead between the park’s peaks, with Mingyue Peak offering a view over central Guilin and the Li River setting. The cave and summit create two different scales of observation: close-up carvings and a wider city landscape. Follow the managed uphill route and choose the climb according to conditions.
The hill's folded, horizontally fractured rock, likened to layers of stacked brocade, is described in the Tang dynasty text Diecai Shan Ji (叠彩山记) by Yuan Hui (元晦), nephew of the poet Yuan Zhen, who linked the name to the alternating colours of the stone. In the Qing dynasty the scholar Qin Huan (秦焕) organized the building of Diecai Pavilion (叠彩亭).
The hill is also known as Wind Cave Hill (风洞山), for a cave within it that produces a breeze year-round, and as Osmanthus Hill (桂山); it stands north of central Guilin, on the west bank of the Li River north of Fubo Hill. It comprises four peaks, Siwang Shan (四望山), Yuyue Shan (于越山), Xianhe Feng (仙鹤峰) and Mingyue Feng (明月峰), long known as 'where rivers and mountains meet' (江山会景处). The hill holds Diecai Pavilion, Yuyue Pavilion (于越亭), Diecai Qionglou (叠彩琼楼) and Yangzhi Hall (仰止堂), with the old Mulong ferry (木龙古渡) at its foot; the wind cave's interior carries poems and inscriptions by writers of successive dynasties, along with about 19 niches of Buddhist rock carvings totalling more than 80 figures.
