About Jianmen Pass

The landscape explains its defensive role on the old Shu Roads more clearly than a timeline alone: the rock walls form the gateway, with the built gate fitted into the gap. The present gate is a modern reconstruction following earlier destruction and earthquake damage. Explore the pass and the managed viewpoints as a mountain visit, choosing paths according to conditions and ability.

The Ming-dynasty gate was demolished in 1932 during construction of a road across the pass, leaving only its foundation. The gate was rebuilt in the 1980s, damaged by fire in 2005 and heavily damaged by the Sichuan earthquake in 2008. The present structure was built in 2009. The pass also appears in the Tang poet Li Bai's (李白) poem Shu Dao Nan (蜀道难), which describes its steep setting and defensive position. The word guan in its Chinese name means pass, so the English form Jianmenguan Pass repeats that meaning.

What to look for

  • The facing cliffs form the natural opening that gives the pass its name.
  • The reconstructed gate shows how a defended crossing occupied the narrow gap.
