About Giant Wild Goose Pagoda North Square
A central water axis rises in terraces towards the tower, with garden areas and cultural walkways on either side. Its design uses the change in ground level to create successive pools and viewpoints, so the space is worth reading even when the musical fountain is not running. The pagoda is the visual focus, but the square is a modern public landscape distinct from the historic temple precinct.
The square runs from the southern end of Yanta Road (雁塔路) in the north to the northern outer wall of Daci'en Temple (大慈恩寺) in the south, bounded by Guangchang Donglu (广场东路) and Guangchang Xilu (广场西路), spanning 218 metres east-west and 364 metres north-south over an area of more than 100 mu (亩). The design uses a 9-metre difference in ground level between its north and south ends to form nine tiers of steps.
The design uses the pagoda as a central axis, dividing the square into three parts. A principal watercourse runs along the centre, with garden areas on either side. Each stepped pool has seven tiers of cascading water, echoing the pagoda's seven storeys. A matrix-style musical fountain was inaugurated on 31 December 2003.
What to look for
- The stepped central pools and fountain axis aligned with the pagoda.
