About Tang Everbright City
Its Tang-inspired streetscape combines shops and cultural venues with a long outdoor sculpture sequence. Kaiyuan Square is particularly useful for understanding the design: a large Xuanzong-centered group and carved columns turn historical themes into public art. An evening stroll emphasizes the lighting, but the sculpture is easier to examine closely in daylight.
Construction of the pedestrian street began in 2002, with its first phase completed and opened in 2009. The Xi'an municipal government carried out a renovation of the district in 2018, completed before New Year's Day 2019. In July 2020 the street was included in China's first batch of national demonstration pedestrian streets (全国示范步行街).
The street runs 2,100 metres from north to south and 500 metres from east to west, bounded by the site of the Tang city wall (唐城墙遗址) to the south, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda's south square to the north, and Ci'en East Road (慈恩东路) and Ci'en West Road (慈恩西路) to the east and west.
