About Zhaohui Pagoda
Also known as the Sanyang Temple Pagoda, this octagonal brick tower has thirteen closely spaced eaves. Its form is best read from outside: the narrowing silhouette, repeated brick corbelling and arched openings create a very different impression from the broader pagodas in central Xi’an. The surrounding square provides room to compare the whole tower with details at its base.
The tower takes its name from Zhaohui Monastery (昭慧院), also known as Sanyang Temple (三阳寺). Its exact construction date is unknown; documentary evidence and analysis of the tower's architectural structure indicate that it was built in the middle Tang period. The pagoda stands 53 metres high with a base diameter of 9 metres. Its hollow interior contains brick stairs reaching the top. The tower became a Shaanxi Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit (陕西省文物保护单位) in 1956 and a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位) in 2006.
