About Beijing Daxing International Airport
Its terminal opened in 2019 and is known for a radiating, starfish-like plan designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and partners. A central hub connects curved wings, while the ground-transport center sits beneath the terminal. The building is worth noticing during a journey, but the useful planning distinction is geographical: Daxing and Capital Airport serve different sides of Beijing and cannot be treated as interchangeable drop-off points.
The airport began operations on 25 September 2019, replacing Beijing Nanyuan Airport (北京南苑机场) and relieving passenger pressure at Beijing Capital International Airport (北京首都国际机场). The terminal, transfer centre, service building and parking building together have a total floor area of 1.03 million square metres. Although much of the airport lies within Langfang, the whole facility is under Beijing's jurisdiction.
The terminal adopted a five-pointed design proposed by ADP Ingénierie (巴黎机场集团建筑设计公司), with its form refined by Zaha Hadid Architects (扎哈建筑事务所). Five passenger concourses radiate from the central core; a service-building wing adds a sixth arm, producing intervals of 60 degrees between adjacent arms. The core has two underground levels and five above ground. Its steel roof is supported mainly by tapered C-shaped columns and tower columns, designed to bring natural light into the building.
