About Zhoukoudian
Finds include human and animal fossils, stone tools and evidence associated with the use of fire. The landscape matters as much as individual objects: water, caves and the meeting of plain and mountains help explain why early people occupied this area. Combine the archaeological grounds with the nearby museum's casts and interpretation; many famous original Peking Man fossils were lost during wartime, so a cast should not be mistaken for the original specimen.
What to look for
- Excavation localities and limestone-cave settings associated with Peking Man.
- Museum interpretation of human fossils, stone tools and prehistoric animals.
- The surrounding landscape that connected shelter, water and early human occupation.
