Setting and landscape

Plain covers about 85 per cent of the land and tilts gently to the southeast; the low hills in the north and east are outliers of Mount Tai (泰山). Xiangshan, 342.8 metres high, carries an old shrine, the Xiangshan Temple (相山庙), from whose gate tower the whole city can be seen. The old Sui embankment (隋堤) across the middle of the plain divides Yellow River flood deposits to the north from an older river-and-lake plain to the south, and breaches in the south bank of the Sui canal left enclosed hollows that are now farmland.

History

The city government dates Huaibei's story to more than 4,000 years ago, when Xiangtu (相土), eleventh-generation ancestor of King Tang of Shang, moved from Shangqiu (商丘) and built a secondary capital at the southern foot of the hill, giving Xiangshan and the town of Xiangcheng (相城) their names. Between 588 and 576 BC Duke Gong of Song moved his capital here to escape floods, and under the Qin and early Han Xiangcheng was the seat of the Sishui and then the Pei commanderies. The city government says the families of Ji Kang (嵇康) and Liu Ling (刘伶), two of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, lived at Linhuan (临涣), the Qin county of Zhi (铚县).

What to see

The Liuzi (柳孜) site on the Sui–Tang canal is part of the Grand Canal World Heritage property; its excavation in 1999 yielded large amounts of white-glazed porcelain. The city's culture and tourism bureau calls the Lieshan kiln site (烈山窑址), named a major national archaeological discovery of 2018, China's first excavated kiln for Song three-colour ware and its earliest excavated kiln for glazed building materials. In Suixi, the Kouzi liquor cellars (口子酒窖池) keep an old well said to date from the Sui or Tang and fermentation pits used for more than 600 years, beside factory buildings in Soviet industrial style; they became a provincial protected site in 2012. Other sites include Linhuan's old city wall (临涣古城墙) and the Huaihai Campaign general front committee headquarters (淮海战役总前委旧址).

Food and local products

Tashan pomegranates (塔山石榴) grow in a belt more than 50 kilometres long centred on Tashan (塔山) in Lieshan District and are harvested from mid-September to early October. The best soft-seeded kind is called rock-sugar pomegranate for the colour of its seeds, and the fruit has been a national geographical-indication product since 2012. Kouzi liquor is brewed in Suixi.

Getting oriented

The city government puts Xuzhou Guanyin Airport (徐州观音机场) 50 kilometres away.
