About Chengqi Lou
Completed in 1709 after construction begun in the Ming period, it is a circular earth building associated with the Jiang clan.
Four concentric rings organize the building, with an ancestral hall at the centre. Its thick rammed-earth exterior contrasts with the timber residential galleries facing inward.
According to local tradition, the alternative name Tianzhu Lou (天助楼) reflects a belief that heaven aided the building's construction. In 2001, it entered the fifth group of Fujian Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units (福建省文物保护单位) and the fifth group of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位).
The building faces south and covers 5,376.17 square metres, with a diameter of 73 metres. Its rammed-earth outer wall is 1.5 metres thick at the base and 1 metre thick at the top. Built by the Jiang clan (江氏), it housed more than 600 people at its peak. In 1986, China Post (中国邮政) featured the building on the Fujian stamp in a series depicting Chinese vernacular dwellings.
