Its attractions are scattered around the coast rather than concentrated beside one landing point. Houzhai is the main town, while historic sites include Song Well near the shore and the former island defence headquarters.
The military remains and coastal scenery make a useful pairing. At the headquarters, the old Guangdong–Fujian boundary marker recalls the island’s administrative history; at Song Well, the freshwater source sits in a markedly different beach setting. Choose two coastal stops and arrange the return journey in advance, because a trip across the bridge is only the first stage of travel around the island.

Getting to Nan'ao Island
Use the road bridge from the Shantou side to reach Nan’ao, then continue to Houzhai or the specific coastal attraction you have chosen. The local guide identifies Houzhai as the main island transport point; plan onward road travel between the separate sites.
