What to see

Building the Goupitan hydropower station (构皮滩水电站), a 3,000-megawatt flagship of Guizhou's West-East power transmission scheme, created Feilong Lake (飞龙湖), which the county government lists as the largest artificial lake in Guizhou. The lake covers 147 square kilometres and has 34 islands, with deep gorges running between stretches of open water. The Feilong Lake resort area in Huashan township (花山乡) also takes in the Feilongzhai 4A scenic area (飞龙寨), the Langshuiwan eco-cultural area (浪水湾), Feilong Cave (飞龙洞) and the karst red cliffs known as Feilong Chibi (飞龙赤壁).

Other listed sights are the provincial Great Wu River scenic area (大乌江风景名胜区) and the Huilongdu battle site (回龙渡战斗遗址), where the Red Army forced a crossing of the Wu River.

History

In 876, under the Tang, two local chieftain posts were set up at Baini (白泥) and at Yuqing, today's Aoxi (敖溪). They were raised to prefectures in 1360 and merged in 1601 to form Yuqing County, then placed under Pingyue (平越) in Guizhou. The county was absorbed into Meitan (湄潭县) in 1958 and restored in 1961.

Food and local products

Yuqing is designated China's home of small-leaf kuding tea (小叶苦丁茶), which has national protected designation of origin. Unlike the big-leaf kuding of the holly family grown in Yunnan, Sichuan, Zhejiang, Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan, Yuqing's tea comes from a privet of the olive family that grows along the Wu River and in the Miao hills. It is picked around the Qingming festival, then fixed, rolled and dried; the county describes the dry leaf, the liquor and the brewed leaves as all green, with a slightly bitter first taste and a sweet finish. Daliangshan rice (大凉山米) from the county has won national gold awards several times.

Getting oriented

The county lies 188 km from the city of Zunyi, on the Wu River in the centre of Guizhou.
