Setting and landscape

The county sits in the middle of the Heilonggang River (黑龙港) basin. It faces Jingxian (景县) across the South Canal to the west, meets Dongguang (东光县) to the north, and borders Ningjin (宁津县) and Lingxian (陵县) in Shandong to the east and Dezhou (德州) to the south. The Cangzhou culture and tourism bureau notes that the land was prone to waterlogging and salinity, and that poor harvests pushed farmers to perform acrobatics for a living in the slack winter and spring months.

History

Wuqiao County dates from 1162, when the Jin set it up at Wuqiao town, on the site of today's Tiecheng (铁城镇). From 1946 the county was administered by Shandong; on 7 October 1952 it was moved to Hebei. In November 1958 it absorbed Gucheng (故城) and Jingxian and moved its seat from Chengguan to Sangyuan (桑园镇), which stayed the seat after the three counties separated again in July 1961.

A tomb of the Wei, Jin and Northern and Southern dynasties uncovered in 1958 at Xiaomachang village (小马厂村) has murals of horse riding, belly balancing and plate spinning. In the Ming and Qing, as canal grain shipping flourished, performers toured along the Grand Canal (大运河), and from the Tang and Song they gathered each year from the fifth day of the ninth lunar month for a month-long "Ninth-Month Temple Fair" (九月庙会). Sun Fuyou (孙福有), who founded the China National Arts Circus (中国国术马戏团) and toured abroad, is called the father of modern world acrobatics.

What to see

Wuqiao acrobatics (吴桥杂技) entered the first national intangible-heritage list in 2006; its traditional repertoire runs to 486 separate acts in seven groups, from body skills and prop tricks to animal training, horsemanship, magic and clowning. Wuqiao Acrobatics World (吴桥杂技大世界) stages it for visitors: in the "Three Immortals Return to the Cave" (三仙归洞) theatre sponge balls pass magically between two bowls, and the Jianghu Show (江湖秀) mixes acrobatics with dance and holograms. The Wuqiao Acrobatics Museum (吴桥杂技博物馆) presents the county's acrobatic heritage.

The China Wuqiao International Circus Festival (中国吴桥国际杂技艺术节), held since 1987, awards the Golden Lion (金狮奖); in 2025, its 20th edition, the main events returned wholly to Wuqiao for the first time.

Getting oriented

The seat, Sangyuan, is 253 kilometres south of Beijing and 173 kilometres from the provincial capital, Shijiazhuang (石家庄). The county lies east of the Beijing–Shanghai Railway (京沪铁路), and the Sangyuan–Ningjin road crosses it from west to east.
