About Chengde Museum
Its displays explore imperial garden culture, Qing court life and Tibetan-Han Buddhist art, helping explain the different architectural and religious traditions encountered around the city. The modern building uses a restrained, stepped courtyard approach inspired by the local garden setting. This entry refers to that purpose-built museum south of Puning Temple, rather than to a gallery inside the Mountain Resort.
Chengde Museum, the city's first modern comprehensive museum, was completed in 2019, and by November that year had finished its exhibition displays and opened to trial visitors. Its own collection was modest, with only 60 registered items or sets recorded in 2022. In September 2022 the museum merged with the former Mountain Resort Museum (承德避暑山庄博物馆), the Chengde Cultural Relics Archive and the Chengde Cultural Relics Information Center to form the Chengde Mountain Resort Museum (承德避暑山庄博物院), becoming one of its two exhibition zones; the merged institution was promoted to a national grade-1 museum in 2024.
