History and character

The name Nanshan ("south hill") comes from the district's position south of the earliest mine in the birthplace of Hegang coal mining. Coal is its pillar industry and main mineral resource, with two state-owned collieries, Xinlu (新陆) and Fuli (富力), and nine local mines. The district also has deposits of a purple clay (紫干土) that can be used to fire ceramics. Its miners have included 12 winners of the national May Day Labour Medal and 22 national model workers, according to the district government.

What to see

The district has seven parks. Fuxing Park (复兴公园) covers 10 hectares beside Fuxing Bridge (复兴桥). Wuzhishan Park (五指山公园), which the district government lists as the only forest park in Hegang, has more than 90 percent plant cover and is where residents go for spring walks, exercise and song-and-dance performances.

For food and evenings out, the district government points to the Jiuzhou food street (九州美食街) commercial area, which extends to the Nanshan South starry-sky campsite (南山南星空露营地) and Nanyuan Square (南苑广场).

Getting oriented

Nanshan borders Dongshan District (东山区) to the east, Xing'an District (兴安区) to the south and Gongnong District (工农区) to the west, with Xiangyang District (向阳区) among its northern neighbours. The district government counts the Hegang city Party committee and city government among some 30 offices based in the district. The district is 3.2 kilometres from Hegang railway station, and the nearest airport is Jiamusi Dongjiao Airport (佳木斯东郊机场), 72 kilometres away. The district government sits at No. 10 Nanshan Road (南山路) in Tiexi subdistrict (铁西街道).
