Setting and landscape

The district borders Youyi County (友谊县) and Baoqing County (宝清县) to the east, Sifangtai District (四方台区) to the west and Jixian County (集贤县) to the north, and it faces Lingdong District (岭东区) across a mountain to the southwest.

The district has three forestry farms, Baoshan, Zhongxin and Dayegou (宝山林场、中心林场、大叶沟林场), and about 17,000 hectares of woodland and grassland. The hills yield wood ear fungus, lion's mane mushrooms (猴头), pine nuts, aralia shoots (刺老芽), daylily buds and bracken, and medicinal herbs such as ginseng and schisandra.

History

The Heilongjiang provincial government approved Baoshan as a county-level district in April 1980. Its coal is part of the Shuangyashan coalfield and is mainly gas coal, low in sulphur and rich in tar, and it supplies steel and power companies in China.

The Guoneng Shuangyashan Power Company (国能双鸭山发电有限公司) sits between the Qixing (七星), Shuangyang (双阳) and Xin'an (新安) collieries of the Shuangyashan Mining Group; the district government calls it the largest mine-mouth thermal power station in Northeast China.

What to see

The Niangqinggu Winery (酿清谷酒庄) in Baoshan combines baijiu and grape-wine making, cellaring, wine-culture tourism and farm sightseeing on one estate, and the Shuangyashan city government lists it among the city's scenic sites. The district's farmland grows soybeans and maize, with white melon seeds (白瓜子) and red kidney beans (红云豆) as cash crops.

Getting oriented

The Jidang road (集当公路) crosses the district and connects with the Harbin–Tongjiang Expressway (哈同高速) towards Jiamusi (佳木斯) and Harbin. A Shuangyashan Mining Group railway line links Baoshan to the national rail network, and Jiamusi airport is 96 km away.
