Wuhan overview 武汉

Wuhan makes most sense as three river cities joined together: Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang.

About Wuhan

The Yangtze and Han rivers explain both its trading history and its sometimes lengthy cross-city journeys. Wuchang brings the Yellow Crane Tower and major provincial collections; Hanyang offers temple courtyards and the musical memory of Guqin Tai. Choose a riverbank as the focus of each outing, then use the bridges and rail network deliberately rather than treating the metropolis as one compact old town.

In the late Qing and early Republican periods, Hankou prospered as a trading port; the British mission that opened it called it the great commercial centre of the Chinese empire, and it became known as the 'Oriental Chicago', a name later applied to Wuhan as a whole. After 1949 Wuhan developed into a national base for industry, science, education and transport.

The city's terrain is mostly level plain, with a limited area of low hills and terraced upland. The 'Golden Waterway' (黄金水道) of the Yangtze (长江) and its largest tributary, the Han River (汉江), cross the built-up area and divide it into the three river towns of Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang. Wuhan administers 13 districts covering 8,569.15 square kilometres, with a permanent resident population of 13.774 million at the end of 2023.

In October 2017 UNESCO admitted Wuhan to its Creative Cities Network with the title 'City of Design' (设计之都), the fourth Chinese city to receive it after Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing. From 2014 to 2018 the city hosted the Wuhan Open tennis tournament each September, and in 2019 it held the seventh Military World Games and staged matches of the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Background & history

Wuhan is the capital of Hubei, China. It is also one of China's nine national central cities. Wuhan historically served as a busy city port for commerce and trading with some crucial influences on Chinese history. The name "Wuhan" came from the city's historical origin from the conglomeration of Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang, which are collectively known as the "Three Towns of Wuhan" (武汉三镇). Wuhan lies in the eastern Jianghan Plain, at the confluence of the Yangtze river and its largest tributary, the Han River, and is known as "Nine Provinces' Thoroughfare" (九省通衢). Wuhan was the site of the 1911 Wuchang Uprising against the Qing dynasty which ended 2,000 years of dynastic rule. Wuhan was briefly a capital of China twice, in 1927 under a left wing Kuomintang (KMT) government, and in 1937 as a provisional wartime capital during World War II. In 1938, during the Second Sino-Japanese War, the city was the site of the Battle of Wuhan.
