About Yangzhou Museum
Its collection connects the canal city with archaeology and decorative arts, including the celebrated Yuan blue-glazed vase decorated with a white dragon. A boat recovered from the Grand Canal provides a more direct link with transport. Pair the city-history galleries with the printing museum to compare the movement of goods with the production and circulation of books. This is the newer western complex, separate from the former Tianning Temple premises.
Its predecessors were the Yangzhou Cultural Relics Hall (扬州文物馆), founded in 1951, and the Subei Museum (苏北博物馆), planned the same year. The China Block Printing Museum (扬州中国雕版印刷博物馆) was established in August 2003. Construction of the Yangzhou Double Museum (扬州双博馆) began on 18 October 2003, and the building was completed and opened to the public in 2005. The museum was previously housed in the 1,500-year-old Tianning Temple before moving to the new building to accommodate its growing collections.
The museum stands in front of Mingyue Lake ('Bright Moon Lake') on West Wenchang Road, about 4 km west of downtown Yangzhou and Slender West Lake. The modern building covers an area of 50,000 square meters and houses seven exhibition halls, including halls devoted to Yangzhou history and ancient Chinese sculpture, with exhibits ranging from the Neolithic period to the late Qing dynasty.
