About Tongtian Rock
Grottoes and niches cut into the red rock hold Buddhist carvings, mostly from the Song period with some earlier Tang figures.
The named rock areas include Wanggui, Tongxin, Tongtian and Cuiwei. The appeal comes from seeing the carved figures in their cliff setting, alongside later inscriptions. Plan a route through the managed grotto sectors and respect barriers protecting the carvings.
The grottoes hold 279 niches (石龛) with 359 carved figures in total. Additional carvings from the Song dynasty through the Republic era number 128. The Tongtian Rock grottoes (通天岩石窟) were listed in 1988 as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位) in the third batch. Later visitors, including Wang Yangming and other literary figures, carved inscriptions into the rock.
