History
The Liyang kiln site (丽阳窑址), in Liyang town (丽阳镇) on the north bank of the Chang River, was excavated in 2005 by a team including the Palace Museum. Archaeologists uncovered a Yuan kiln 24.2 metres long whose shape marks the transition from the long dragon kiln to the gourd-shaped kiln, and a gourd-shaped kiln from the early Ming, dated to the Xuande to Tianshun reigns. The site became a national key cultural relics protection unit in 2013, and in 2017 it was put on China's tentative World Heritage list as part of the Jingdezhen imperial kiln heritage. The district also has provincially listed cliff carvings on Guopu Peak (郭璞峰).
What to see
The Jingdezhen Ancient Kiln Folk Custom Expo Area (景德镇古窑民俗博览区), at 1 Guyao Road off Ciudu Avenue (瓷都大道), is built around the Zhen kiln (镇窑), a rare intact Qing-dynasty kiln that is a national key cultural relics protection unit and was fired again in a ceremony in 2014. Beside it stands the Qing temple to the Wind and Fire Master (风火仙师庙), which honours Tong Bin (童宾), a Wanli-era kiln master who died while firing a great dragon vat for the imperial court and became the potters' kiln god. The site is a national 5A scenic area. It also holds two groups of relocated houses: the Ming Garden (明园), seven Ming buildings including a village gate, a shop and an ancestral hall, listed nationally in 2013; and the Qing Garden (清园), four Qing buildings including a Tianhou (Mazu) temple.
The Jingdezhen China Ceramics Museum (景德镇中国陶瓷博物馆) is at 1 Zijing North Road (紫晶北路). The China National Tourist Office in Singapore describes it as the country's first museum devoted to ceramics; its permanent display runs in nine parts, opening with the origins of pottery and closing with China as the land of porcelain.
