History
The Imperial Kiln Factory (御窑厂), called the Imperial Porcelain Factory (御器厂) in the Ming and early Qing, was set up in 1369 and made porcelain for the court of both dynasties for more than 400 years. Taiping troops burned it in 1855; it was rebuilt in 1866 and stopped firing in the early Republic. Rescue digs from 1982 and a formal excavation in 2002–2004 exposed early Ming kilns and more than ten tonnes of early and mid-Ming sherds. The kiln site became a national key cultural relics protection unit in 2006, and in 2026 the handmade porcelain industry heritage of Jingdezhen (景德镇手工瓷业遗存), which includes the Imperial Kiln Factory, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
What to see
The kiln site at 187 Zhushan Middle Road is now the Imperial Kiln Factory National Archaeological Site Park, and the Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum (景德镇御窑博物馆) inside it displays porcelain that is mostly restored from sherds dug up on the site.
West of the site, the Pengjianong historic quarter (彭家弄历史文化街区) keeps Ming and Qing buildings in lanes that once held porcelain workshops, river trade and homes; it was listed as a Jiangxi historic quarter in 2015 and includes the Hubei Guild Hall (湖北会馆). In Xiangji Upper Lane (祥集上弄), two Ming houses from the Chenghua reign, numbers 3 and 11, have been national key cultural relics protection units since 1988.
About 3 kilometres east along Zhushan Avenue (珠山大道), Taoxichuan (陶溪川) is a creative quarter built in the state-run Yuzhou porcelain factory (宇宙瓷厂) of 1958. Its 22 surviving factory buildings, from the raw-materials workshop to the firing hall and packing store, keep old kilns, chimneys and water towers; the firing hall is now the Jingdezhen Ceramic Industrial Heritage Museum, and makers from more than 50 countries gather in the quarter each year.
