Setting and landscape
The southeast of the district is mountain country and the northwest an alluvial plain, with low hills around Duanjiling (段吉岭), Xiaobaishan (小白山) and Mopan Mountain (磨盘山). Motian Ridge (摩天岭), at 1,325 metres, is the highest peak and forms the border with Huadian (桦甸市). Jiaohe (蛟河市) lies to the east and Yongji County (永吉县) to the west.
Songhua Lake is the district's only lake. It formed after the Fengman hydropower dam was closed in 1942, has an average depth of 40 metres and freezes from January to April. About 30 kilometres of the Songhua River run through the district, and all of its other rivers, including the Wende River (温德河), belong to the Songhua system.
What to see
In hard frost, rime ice (雾凇) forms on the trees along the Songhua. The Fengman power station, 15 kilometres upstream of the city, keeps the river at around 4°C in winter; with air temperatures of minus 20°C or colder on the banks, vapour rising from the water freezes straight onto branches in coats 40 to 60 millimetres thick. The district government calls the riverbanks here the best stretch for viewing it.
The Zhonglü Songhua Lake Resort (中旅松花湖度假区) is a national 4A scenic area and a national ski-tourism resort.
Food and local products
Songhua Lake is known for its 'three flowers and one island' (三花一岛): the bianhua, jihua and aohua fish and the daozi. Steamed Songhua Lake whitefish (清蒸松花湖白鱼) is served either for its broth, with the flesh left unseasoned, or dry-steamed so the juices soak into the fish; both need live fish. The Jiangdong fish harbour (江东鱼港), at the Jiangdong bridge below the Fengman power plant, has more than 30 fish restaurants and fills with diners during the Songhua Lake 'river-opening fish' (开江鱼) food festival.
History
People lived here in the Neolithic. In 108 BC the area came under the Han commandery of Xuantu (玄菟郡); in 762 it belonged to Su prefecture (涑州) of the Bohai kingdom. After Jilin was taken in March 1948 the rural belt around the city was run as five suburban districts, and on 23 July 1957 four of their offices were abolished and a single Jilin Suburban District was formed.
