About Liaoning Provincial Museum

The Ancient Liaoning galleries connect prehistoric Hongshan jade with later regional cultures. Liao ceramics provide another strong focus, including distinctive chicken-comb-shaped flasks and three-colour wares. The museum also holds celebrated paintings and calligraphy, but fragile works rotate, so a particular scroll should not be assumed to be on view simply because it belongs to the collection.

The museum originated in 1933 as the Fengtian branch of Manchukuo's National Central Museum (满洲国立中央博物馆奉天分馆), housed in the former mansion of the warlord Tang Yulin (汤玉麟), governor of Rehe. After Japan's surrender the Nationalist government took it over in 1946 as the National Shenyang Museum (国立沈阳博物馆); following the Liaoshen Campaign it was reorganised as the Northeast Museum (东北博物馆) and reopened on 7 July 1949, the first museum established after the founding of the People's Republic. It was renamed Liaoning Provincial Museum on 5 January 1959; exhibitions paused after 1966, though archaeological and collecting work continued.

A new building on Government Square opened in November 2004 with 8,531 square metres of exhibition space in twelve galleries. In 2008 it was rated a first-batch national first-grade museum by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, and in 2009 a first-batch nationally-and-locally co-built national-level museum. The museum moved again in May 2015, to a new site of 83,200 square metres in Hunnan District, currently the largest provincial-level museum by area in the country.
