About Wangmu Palace Grottoes
A central pillar creates a passage around its core, with carved figures covering the pillar and surrounding walls. Buddha images, attendants and an elephant bearing a stupa make the interior unusually dense. The shared hill name can be misleading: the cave and the hilltop Wangmu sanctuary represent distinct religious traditions.
What to look for
- The central pillar and the passage around it.
- The carved Buddhist figures and the elephant carrying a stupa among the reliefs.
