About Zhangye Wooden Pagoda Temple
The present tower was rebuilt in 1926 and combines masonry in its lower levels with timber eaves and more extensive timberwork above. Its stacked roofs create a different silhouette from the broad hall of nearby Dafo Temple. The associated scripture building and stone inscription add context to a short city-centre stop; the tower’s historic interior should not be assumed to be open for climbing.
What to look for
- The nine-level pagoda silhouette and the transition from masonry to timber construction.
- The associated scripture building and temple-rebuilding inscription.
