About Yanggong Causeway
Built under the magistrate Yang Mengying in the Ming period, it linked low islands that later became attached to the shore as the lake silted up. Today its setting is more enclosed than the open-water Su Causeway. Quyuan Fenghe at the northern end and Flower Harbor toward the south provide two distinct garden stops along this western lake landscape.
Yanggong Causeway was originally known as Xishan Road (西山路). Together with Su Causeway (苏堤) and Bai Causeway (白堤), it is counted as one of the 'Three Causeways of West Lake' (西湖三堤). It runs along Xili Lake (西里湖) on the lake's western side, from Renshou Mountain (仁寿山) in the north to Chishan Pier (赤山埠) in the south, linking small West Lake islands including Dingjia Mountain (丁家山) and Mianniu Mountain (眠牛山). Besides Quyuan Fenghe to its north and Flower Harbor to its south, the well-known garden Liu Zhuang (刘庄) also lies along the causeway.
What to look for
- The smaller waterways and planted banks along the western lake.
