About Yanji Dinosaur Museum
Its six Korean-style buildings divide the visit between a broad Dinosaur Planet introduction and the Dragon Rising in Yanji galleries devoted to the local discoveries. Petrified-wood displays near the entrance add another form of prehistoric evidence. This is a museum-focused visit within the larger dinosaur tourism area, separate from the neighbouring amusement park and from the protected fossil site itself.
The museum originated from the discovery in May 2016 of Cretaceous-period dinosaur fossils, dated to about 110 million years ago, at Longshan (龙山) on the southern slope of Mao'er Mountain, filling a gap in dinosaur fossil finds in northeastern China. The Longshan Dinosaur Fossil Site (龙山恐龙化石遗址) was designated a national-level key protected paleontological fossil site in December 2016, after which the Yanji city government planned a dinosaur museum and resort around the find.
Part of the museum opened in 2019, the same year the Jilin Yanji Dinosaur Culture Research and Development Center (吉林延吉恐龙文化研究发展中心) was formed to combine it with nearby attractions into the Mao'er Mountain Dinosaur Cultural Tourism Area. The Dinosaur Planet hall opened in May 2021, and the area was rated a national 4A tourist attraction that year. The remaining halls, called Dragon Rising in Yanji, opened in September 2022, completing the museum.
What to look for
- Dinosaur Planet in Building 2, introducing dinosaurs with an emphasis on China.
- Dragon Rising in Yanji in Buildings 3–5, interpreting the local fossil discoveries, plus the entrance's petrified-wood displays.
