A volcanic landscape
Mount Jieshi rises to 63.4 metres above sea level. A volcanic eruption about 730,000 years ago formed its cone-shaped accumulation of volcanic material. Its lower rocks preserve rope-like, flame-like and vesicular structures produced by flowing magma, while volcanic fragmental rock covers the upper part. The geological scenery includes volcanic structures, lava landforms and deposits of volcanic debris.
What to see
The hill’s named sites include Guanhai Pavilion (观海阁), the Mountain God Temple (山神庙), Yuwang Pavilion (禹王亭) and the Mount Jieshi Geological Exhibition Hall (碣石山地质展览厅). Mount Jieshi became a provincial geological heritage nature reserve in March 1999.
