About Qingdao Guest House
It occupies a hillside site below Signal Hill at 26 Longshan Road.
Its architecture combines Wilhelmine-era German forms with Jugendstil and other European decorative influences. The former residence now provides the setting for a museum about the historic building.
The residence was designed by German architect Werner Lazarowicz (维尔纳·拉查洛维奇) and built beginning in 1903, largely complete by 1907; with its greenhouse, veranda and other outbuildings, the whole complex was finished by 1908. The building has a floor area of more than 4,000 square meters and cost 450,000 marks (45万马克) to build.
After completion the building served continuously as the German governor's residence until Japan replaced Germany in Qingdao after the First World War, when it became the residence of the Japanese garrison commander. In 1934 it was formally converted into a guest house; Japan occupied Qingdao again in January 1938 and turned it into an international club, and after Japan's surrender in 1945 it reverted to a guest house. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, leaders including Mao Zedong and foreign guests such as Norodom Sihanouk stayed there, and since the reform and opening period it has also hosted weddings.
In 1995 the State Council listed the building as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (国家重点文物保护单位). The Qingdao municipal government opened it as a tourist site on 1 May 1999, with about 60 percent of its space open to visitors, and in 2001 the National Tourism Administration rated it a national AAA-level tourist site (全国AAA级旅游景点).
