About Xiaotayuan Mosque
Its architecture combines Chinese and Islamic elements, giving it a different visual character from the Buddhist and Taoist sites nearby.
A separate women’s mosque stands next door, an important distinction within the religious complex. Compare the accessible exteriors and the relationship between the buildings, while recognizing that prayer areas are working religious spaces. Interior entry depends on the community’s arrangements rather than the general accessibility of the street.
The mosque was funded by Jin Ziyun (金子云), a Hui Muslim industrialist originally from Nanjing who had prospered trading cattle hides to Europe after 1931. The area had once contained a large peach grove that was Jin's private garden. In 1917 he paid over 12,000 silver dollars for a garden residence belonging to a Mr. Pan (潘姓绅士) at Xicangqiao Street, covering 2.4 mu (亩), and donated it as a mosque. Six years later he provided further funds for an Arabic-style redesign; construction took three years and was completed in 1925, producing a building that combines Arabic and traditional Chinese architectural styles.
Its north-facing gate carries a Quran inscription, and the east facade has a colonnaded porch with pointed-arch windows; arched domes rise at the roof's centre and corners, the central one topped by a moon-viewing pavilion (望月亭) with a crescent-and-star finial. West of the entrance courtyard stands a two-storey prayer hall whose wide arched-roof structure is unusual among Chinese mosques; its two storeys, 4.7 and 5.7 metres high, together hold up to 1,000 worshippers.
A three-storey hall on the courtyard's east side now serves as a library and reading room holding Chinese and foreign editions of the Quran. The mosque's former site (旧址) was designated a Shanghai Municipal cultural heritage site (上海市文物保护单位) in 2014.
