About Tianjin Postal Museum

Large Dragon stamp designs and proofs are a central thread, supported by original postal documents, mail-transport objects and specialized philatelic material. The museum's setting helps explain Tianjin's role in the development of China's modern postal service. Follow the transport story first, then look closely at the stamps and their design process rather than treating the collection only as rows of small printed objects.

The museum opened on 9 October 2010 in the former premises of the Qing dynasty's Tianjin Postal Bureau (大清邮政津局). Its holdings include an 1897 Red Revenue small-figure one-dollar stamp (红印花小字当壹圆) bearing an eight-trigram postmark (八卦戳). The collection also contains a postal carriage, Tang-period brick pictures and stamps such as the Large Dragon (大龙邮票) issues.

A manuscript by the stamp illustrator Fei La'er (费拉尔) records designs for the Empress Dowager's birthday commemorative stamps (慈禧寿辰纪念邮票) and coiled-dragon stamps (蟠龙邮票), as well as design information for the Large Dragon (大龙邮票) and Small Dragon (小龙邮票) issues. The museum was named a national 3A tourist attraction (国家3A级旅游景区) in 2012 and a Tianjin patriotic education base (天津市爱国主义教育基地) in 2013. In 2017 it hosted the fourth Cross-Strait Rare Stamps Exhibition (海峡两岸珍邮特展).
