About Kizil Caves
Their forms and painted scenes preserve an important part of ancient Kucha’s Buddhist culture. The surviving murals are fragmentary, and other works removed from the caves are held in collections elsewhere. Guided interpretation helps connect the remaining surfaces with the original religious spaces and the routes through which artistic ideas travelled.
Cave construction began around the third century and continued into the eighth or ninth century. Early chambers were often square, while later central-pillar caves developed distinctive diamond-shaped arrangements of painted scenes across their ceilings. Several caves retain traces of two or three phases of repainting. Subjects include the Buddha's life and previous lives, celestial musicians, flying figures and donors.
The complex extends for about 3 kilometres and includes caves in four principal areas. Excavation and stabilisation work in 1989 and 1990 uncovered further chambers that had been buried by sand and earth. The site became a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位) in 1961 and was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2014 as part of the Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor.
