A fishing port’s architecture
Dongsha developed from a coastal fish market into a fishing and trading settlement. Its houses reveal adaptations to island weather: low eaves and short roof overhangs respond to strong winds, while decorative ridge bricks and brick carvings add detail to the roofs and walls. Some merchant courtyards were built particularly spaciously to accommodate the drying of fish.
Culture beyond the port
Fishing songs, fishermen’s paintings and traditional fish processing form part of Dongsha’s heritage. Elsewhere in the county, Moxin Mountain (磨心山) and Guanyin Mountain (观音山) have Buddhist cultural associations. The2021 county tourism-planning description lists museums devoted to fishing, typhoons, salt and lighthouses among its existing maritime cultural resources.
